Great opportunity to ride somewhere new.  Next time i'll wait for the snow to melt so I can make it a loop.

We went up the day after the other two guys did.   Just poked along the dirt road at a cool 25mph taking in all the sights.    The water was low in the river/ resovior area.   I was suprised at the condition of the road.(Very well maintained for its location

26APR2020 – 08 Mineral

From site 09 - Weiser Dunes, I headed north on Olds Ferry road following Special Ed, Cuprum Hermit, Bill Bart, and our two non-IAMC riders.  Once we got through Steck Park, the well-maintained gravel road became much less maintained. Lots of rocks, braking and acceleration bumps on up-hill and downhill sections, and numerous potholes made this section a bit more challenging. After 3-4 miles, it started getting worse, so the decision was made to loop back south and attack Site 08 from a different direction.

While flying back down Olds Ferry road, just before the Dunes, Special Ed found a nice, new, 3” sheetrock screw with his rear tire.  Honestly, I have never seen a rear tube changed so quickly. Ed is the “Tire Master.” As we continued southeast, we came upon a very short 35mph section of road near some houses. Parked on the east side of the road was a white, unmarked, Sherrif’s truck. We were doing a bit over 35, and he lit up the light bar but chose not to pursue. I’m convinced that six riders all in full gear helped the Officer make that decision – another reason for ATGATT.

We got back to pavement and rode around for a bit practicing u-turns until we found site 10 – Weiser Hot Springs, took our pics and continued NW on Henley Basin Rd/Mineral Road/Rock Creek Rd. Henley Basin is paved for several miles, then becomes a graded dirt highway that is well maintained – but littered with sharp turns, numerous elevation changes, and occasional cows. Once you get on Mineral Road, things get interesting.

Mineral Road is carved into the east side of the Snake River canyon. It is very twisty, narrow in places, and not particularly well maintained. An inordinate amount of 4-wheel traffic was competing for road-space on this Sunday ride, so I would suggest a weekday excursion if possible. Where Wolf Creek enters the Snake, the road turns back into Rock Creek Road, but conditions remain the same. Many twists and turns later, you’ll come to a “T” with a gate on your left – only 3 miles or so to go!

Now you’re on a single lane Forest Service road. We found Mineral (on the right heading NE) and were greeted by some wild turkey (the flappy kind, not the drinking kind).  Once we took our pictures and got everyone turned around, we headed back to Weiser the way we’d rode in, then home.

And if you’re wondering, driving these roads in a car will almost certainly require a trip to Fast Glass for a windshield repair – especially if Cuprum Hermit or Special Ed happen to pass you en route!

Had a great ride up to Mineral  Stopped at the gate about a mile or so back and luckily looked  at the GPS and found Mineral was not at the location shown on the IAMC website   No Biggie just another fun wrinkle in the hunt for challenge sites   If it was easy it would not be FUN

3 for 3 on the day. Took the mountain side back. No snow, but the ground up the main pass was very loose.
