Ride Description:

Please note that I've changed the departure time a couple of times.  I've settled on the early departure 6:00AM.  That gets us over to the east side of the state with lots of daylight left.

A few years ago, club member IdahoSam organized and led a tour of Montana Ghost Towns.  I plan to retrace that route.

Departure will be from the Boise Stage Stopon I-84 east of town.  We will be leaving at 6:00AM.  If you want to get breakfast, be there about 5:00AM

  • Day 1 Boise to Clover Meadow Campground Ennis, MT
  • Day 2 Clover Meadow to Merry Widow Campground Basin, MT
  • Day 3 Basin to Remote camp near Coloma, MT
  • Day 4 Coloma to Philipsburg, MT
  • Day 5 Philipsburg to Bannack, MT
  • Day 6 Bannack to Boise, ID

We will be camping each night.  Where possible, I prefer to get meals at restaurants.  It looks like 2 or 3 of the camp locations might not have food conveniently available.  You should plan to have meals with you for those nights/mornings.

I don't know what the roads are like on this route, so I posted a generic "Level 3" dificulty.  It will be a combination of freeway, highway, and back roads, so there will be a wide range of conditions.

I've posted the tracks from the original ride at ridewithgps.com/trips/52061699.  Our route will follow the original fairly closely.

7/14 - I posted the first draft of the route gpx file here  I included routes for most of the segments.  Beware that your map or gps might interpret these routes differently than originally plotted.  I also included high resolution tracks from the first ride as well as reduced resolution tracks for devices with 500 point track limits.

When IdahoSam created this route, he did quite a bit of research into the history of some of these locations.  I've uploaded PDFs from Sam's preparation.
